Far from the Light of Heaven
3/5. A long-haul space voyage ends with the captain woken from stasis to find the AI offline and something very wrong on the ship. A mix of space horror/action with a bit of mystery and a heavy slug of African spiritualism in scifi clothing (that last part is really cool).
Interesting, but it won't linger with me or anything. This book is refreshingly short, with punchy, precise chapters that condense surprising amounts of character work into what feel like hard little pellets of narrative.* So I enjoyed it in the present moment of reading, but the ultimate explanation for what is happening hits that unsweet spot of both too complicated and too mundane, and I didn't really latch on to any of these characters, as particular and interesting as they are.
*Don't @ me, I am on many many drugs and might have a surprise!second!super rare medical condition that most doctors have never heard of, it's a lot right now, t minus seven days to start of interstate move, ha ha ha ha ha.
