Devil's Cub Devil's Cub by Georgette Heyer

My rating: 2 of 5 stars
Another Georgian era romance. The scandalous dueling rake dallies with a girl! But her sister takes her place to save her honor! And he kidnaps the sister to Paris! And then he must marry her to save her reputation (because she, unlike her sister, has upper class graces, and is therefore worthy).

Okay, I think I officially have the wrong-shaped brain for historical romance. The hero demonstrates his willingness to strangle the heroine and I think, oh, God, she's about to mistake adrenalized terror for attraction isn't she?. He kisses her and I think, do either of them have all their teeth, being over the age of twenty? They get engaged at last, and I think does she know that women can have orgasms?

I should have just stuck with The Grand Sophy, which was adorable and didn't make me go, "but! But!" a lot.

Your reading of Heyer is similar to mine. Some are fun, but a lot are just meh...

Well, this isn't one of my favs either, but technically it is a sequel, and you *might* have slightly more sympathy for some of the characters if you'd fallen for them in a previous book.

Also? That previous book (These Old Shades) is the only Heyer I know to have spawned some v. v. cool slash. Might be worth a look (or not -- not pushing, just, ah, informing [g]).

I didn't really get much out of These Old Shades, either, aside from baseline entertainment. Though actually, Leonie grown up was one of the nice things about this book.

Also, I'd heard that elsewhere about the slash, and was puzzled. You mean Avon/Leon?

Nope

Avon/Hugh -- usually set earlier in their lives; Avon's 40ish, at least, when the book starts, after all.

I'm glad actualy you're reading all this Heyer, because I've been hearing for ages as to how they're All That, and I tried one (Friday's Child) and was really not impressed. So now I know to try again with The Grand Sophy...
