Nettle and Bone

4/5. A grown up fairy tale about the princess sent off to a convent for political reasons gathering up friends and allies and going to rescue her sister married off to an abusive prince.

Lovely. This hits all the beats – struggle, companionship, self-realization – as expected, but never boringly. This is a feminist rage fairy tale, but it lets that rage be complicated in the way such personal things are; the handling of the mother, who sent her daughters into hell with some amount of knowledge, is particularly deft. Oh, and there’s a horrifying bone doggo who is a very good boy.

Mostly, though, I would read the adventures of the Dustwife and Agnes for a really long time. Hello, Yuletiders.

Ditto about the dustwife and Agnes. Also, what a killer opening this book has. "The trees were full of crows and the woods were full of madmen. The pit was full of bones and her hands were full of wires."
