3/5. Brief nonfiction discussion of destructive algorithms, with an emphasis on those that perpetuate poverty. Think automated job applicant sorting programs for blue collar work, or recidivism checklists. Interesting, but you could get much of the same info more efficiently in a few longreads. Also, this book had the misfortune to be published in 2016, and to include a section on Facebook and politics which now reads like it was written in approximately 1875. This book also around the edges chronicles the radicalization of the author, a former hedge fund quant, which would be a much more interesting story if she were a better writer, but to be fair that's a different book.
