Yeah, stoned on painkillers is totally the best way to review this one.



If you tilt your head to the right, this is a cozily hijinxical* Canadian urban fantasy with a magical junk shop and a leprechaun and a snuggly extended family who express their feelings by baking a lot, also dragons.



But if you tilt your head to the left, it’s seriously fucked up slice-of-life about a family of creepy mind-controlling witches who have a consent-optional incestuous breeding program RUN AWAY RUN AWAY.



So I mostly kept my head tilted to the right. Advise doing the same.

I'm mostly through this out of sheer cussedness (I hate giving up on books) but I have to say the constant repetition of "Gale girls do X" kept my head firmly to the left here. It's creepy and it's essentialist and demoralizing (free will? what free will?) and smug. I'm pretty sure I got it because a character is supposed to quote Dean Winchester at some point, but I guess I haven't gotten there yet, although I thought Michael was described as physically equivalent to Jared Padalecki.

Yeah, I picked this up, read the first 30 pages, went "whaaa?" and poked around the internet for reviews to see what was up. Several people insist she complicates the gender issues at the end. I see none of that. Not even a little bit.

Charlie does quote Dean. And there's a Jack Harkness reference. Otherwise...yeah.
