Have you read McKinley's Rose Daughter, another retelling of Beauty and the Beast that she wrote twenty years after she wrote Beauty? The ending is very different from the one in Beauty. I wonder if she felt some of the same disquiet about the underlying message in the first book that you did, and maybe that's what moved her to write the second book. I'm curious what you'd think of it.
