Another thought: I possibly identified with Maud and Roland a bit more than most because I was for a number of years (including when I first read the book) steeped in the academic world, and really, Maud's neuroticism and Roland's plodding narrowness? Spot on. And it's not really particularly either funny or pathetic, it's just the way things are.
