The Priory of the Orange Tree

2/5. One of those doorstop epic fantasies about competing cultures having to work together to banish the evil Nameless One who is unbound after a thousand years, also dragons.

Huh. Basically this is one of those humorless, extremely self-serious, turgid epic fantasies, except 80% of the important actions are by women, and there is a central lesbian romance. And I am here to tell you that neither of those facts rescues this book from being humorless, self-serious, etc. Even though the lesbian romance is between a queen and her handmaiden who is a secret warrior sent to protect her. That is some great powers of humorlessness, I tell you what.

Look, when you are breastfeeding up to five hours a day, sometimes you just read the 800 page thing.
