The Tiger's Daughter
3/5. High fantasy about demons rising and the lesbian romance between the princess of fantasy!Japan/China and a not-a-princess-but-its-complicated of fantasy!mongol steppes.
Read in bits over months. This has a lot of elements I like – an unwavering commitment to women's stories and women's familial/soldierly/romantic relationships as the most interesting parts of this story and, I mean, lesbian royal romance – but it leans too hard into its lyrical high fantasy pretentions for my tastes, and never quite managed to snag me. Also – I'm not qualified to comment myself – but others have taken issue with cultural appropriation by the author, who apparently is not Asian but really likes anime, if you know what I mean. You know what I mean.
