3/5. 90's epic fantasy about a spy who picks up a young protégée on his travels, and magic and secret parentage and what not.
This has been on my TBR for nearly twenty years, if you want to feel old. I vaguely recall being harangued by multiple fandom and fandom-adjacent people about how great this is, presumably because it has a queer character and makes the faintest gestures towards a queer relationship (though that is quite the age difference/power differential, yikes). Sorry guys, but this is pretty boring. And so very committed to its esthetic, which is screamingly out of style now. Someone literally says "the time is nigh" in the prologue. With a straight face! I might have enjoyed this twenty years ago . . . maybe . . . but now it is really not for me.
