3/5. Another M/M, this one tangential to the Magpie books. About a thief and a former cop forced close again after the sort of bad breakup that involves betrayal and blackmail and prison time.
So basically, this book was too complicated for my current needs. It's about two people who have done each other wrong finding their way through bitterness and regret and back to something good, all while fleeing for their lives. That's a hard story, and a tricky one. Also complicatedly romantic, in a deeply genre-unconventional way that I respected, even as it wore on my raw nerves.
Mostly, though, I fundamentally disliked one of the protagonists. We come to understand why he is flighty (ha) and impulsive and untrustworthy, and the book makes a good argument about the hypocrisy of condemning him for what the world made of him. But he is someone that I could never, ever love myself, and could probably never like, so watching the other protagonist hopelessly love him was confusing and a little bit frustrating, and I never really pulled for these guys because I was never actually sure they were a good idea.
