I'm about halfway through this book, and quite enthusiastic about it. It reminds me in a lot of ways of Octavia Butler's writing, without the quality that made me stop reading Butler's novel-length works. I don't know what the difference is, because they both write with an underlying bleakness to the universe, but Jemisin never crushes me the way Butler does, and therefore I will read her stories.
