I think I stopped partway into book four (something that started in/on/at/etc the Republic of Haven (?) anyway ... I just had to give up on the plasticene characters. It didn't get better until then, but then, it's only 1 book ahead of where you are at. I can't think of any weber-but-good I've read though.
