I actually felt a little less irritable with him over that after reading the biography, since it turns out Tiptree (Tip) had been corresponding with him steadily and deliberately playing the man at him. So it's not like he came up with that just from the stories. But that . . . doesn't really make it any better, it just gives him something to hide behind.
